We reported last time that Nintendo already confirmed that Star Fox Guard – the tower defense game inspired by and released alongside with Star Fox Zero – will come with full amiibo support. Several days ahead of if its official release in the US on April 22 next week, GameXplain has uploaded a video of an actual gameplay in its YouTube channel showing how the Fox McCloud and Falco Lombardi amiibos will function in the Star Fox Guard.

As seen from the video, using the Fox and Falco amiibo allows Star Fox Guard players to call forth reinforcements where Fox and his fleet comes in with a supporting air strike. In just one swoop, the Star Fox fleet virtually wipes out all advancing robotic enemies. It sounds like a cheap shot, but any gamer will understand the value of that last ditch effort to win a game. Not to burst anyone’s bubble, but since you can only use the amiibo once per day, Nintendo does not allow you to exploit this feature often. Consider it as an emergency panic button.

Star Fox Guard features the characters of Slippy and his uncle Grippy – where the latter tasks you in defending his company, the Corneria Precious Metals Ltd. using the Aegis Cam Security System. Without telling you how to use it, Uncle Grippy gives you the job right away as the newly hired defense specialist, and is tasked to monitor the 12 cameras used by the system. Star Fox Guard is a great way to test your peripheral vision and response time as hordes of enemy robots spawn and attack Uncle Grippy’s facility. As Attack of the Fan Boy puts it, “Essentially Star Fox Guard is about pushing the limits of your attention.”

Star Fox Guard for the Wii U will launch on April 22 and can be purchased digitally over at Nintendo’s eShop retailing at $14.99. It also comes as a bonus game bundled in physical disc format when you purchase a First Print edition of Star Fox Zero also on launch date. It retails at $59.99 at Amazon.

Here’s Nintendo’s official description of Star Fox Guard.

Grippy Toad, the founder of Corneria Precious Metals Ltd., and Slippy Toad of the legendary team Star Fox needs your help protecting their booming business! All you have to do is keep an eye on a dozen video screens as you mow down waves of attacking robots with your turret-mounted cameras!

Quick! Tap the corresponding camera on the Wii U™ GamePad controller to see the entrances and shoot those walking and rolling robots down! But just when you think it’s all smooth sailing, look out for robots that carry shields, trigger smoke bombs, or even steal your cameras. Complete missions to level up, unlock more missions, and gain access to special cameras you can use to defend each facility. Then, customize your own waves of attacking robots to challenge (or terrorize) your friends!

  • Watch video screens as you frantically shoot down waves of attacking robots
  • Defend your facility from the evil (but cute) forces of Andross
  • Create your own waves of attacking enemies and share them with friends
  • Level up to unlock more missions and special cameras
